In 2019, she became the first black woman to be appointed creative director of American Vogue.

Howard’s goal was to create a positive role model for African-American children. She was also inspired by her own experiences growing up in poverty in Philadelphia. “I wanted to show kids that you can do anything if you set your mind to it,” she said.
