Minavann Howard was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Her childhood was spent playing in the streets with her cousins and riding bikes around the neighborhood. Howard started modelling at the age of 13, appearing in print and online campaigns for brands such as Nike, Beats by Dre, and Oakley. In 2014, she made her acting debut in the film “Get on Up”. She has since appeared in films such as “BlacKkKlansman”, “If Beale Street Could Talk”, and “The Hate U Give”. Howard is also a frequent collaborator with fashion brands including Adidas Originals, Saint Laurent, and Givenchy. In 2019, she became the first black woman to be appointed creative director of American Vogue.

Her first book, Girl in the Water: A True Story of Survival (2003), tells the story of a young girl who was abducted and raped by two men in the Philippines. The book was later adapted into a film, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2004.
Since then, Howard has written two more books: The Hours (2007), about Virginia Woolf’s life; and Beloved (2006), set in Baltimore during the 1820s. Her most recent book is an adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, which was published in October 2015.

Slant is known for its avant-garde approach, focusing on both established and up-and-coming artists and writers. In his first year of publication, Slant won a Webby Award for Best Online Magazine. The magazine has since received several other awards and accolades, including the prestigious National Magazine Award in 2010.

In 2009, Minnie Howard wrote and directed her first feature film, “It Takes a Village.” The film tells the story of an African-American family in the 1970s who are struggling to make ends meet. The cast includes Nia Long, James Earl Jones, and Forest Whitaker.
Howard’s goal was to create a positive role model for African-American children. She was also inspired by her own experiences growing up in poverty in Philadelphia. “I wanted to show kids that you can do anything if you set your mind to it,” she said.
The film was well received by critics, who praised its cinematic quality and the powerful message it sends to young audiences. It has since won several awards, including Best Picture at the Black Film Festival South and Best Feature at the Harlem International Film Festival. Minavann yung Howard!
